ETA Kenya: what nationalities are eligible?

Entering Kenya has never been easier than it is today with the introduction of the ETA Kenya. In this article, we will explore the different nationalities eligible for the ETA Kenya as well as the procedure to follow to obtain this electronic authorisation.

What is ETA Kenya?

The ETA Kenya is an automated system that allows foreign travellers to obtain travel authorisation online to enter Kenya. This system was designed to facilitate and speed up the process for travellers following the abolition of visas.

Eligible nationalities: who can apply for ETA Kenya?

Every country in the world must apply for an ETA for Kenya, whatever the reason.

Only nationals of countries bordering Rwanda, Tanzania, DR Congo, Uganda, Burundi and South Sudan are exempt.

Conditions for obtaining the Kenya ETA

To qualify for an ETA Kenya authorisation, a number of conditions must be met:

  • A valid passport, valid for at least 6 months after the date of entry into Kenya
  • Have a return or onward ticket
  • Be in good health and free from serious contagious diseases
  • Not have been convicted of serious crimes or offences related to terrorism
  • Not represent a threat to Kenyan security or territorial integrity

Documents required for the ETA Kenya application

The following documents must be presented when applying for an ETA:

  • A valid passport : The passport must be valid and have at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
  • A recent passport photo : The photo must be in colour and comply with international standards. It must show the face clearly, without glasses or headgear (except for religious reasons). Self-portraits are not accepted.
  • Proof of accommodation reservation : Proof of accommodation in Kenya is required, either in the form of a hotel reservation or a written invitation from a private individual.
  • Depending on the reason (business, humanitarian, visiting relatives): letter of invitation from hosts in Kenya.

Kenya ETA application: stages and deadlines

The ETA Kenya application must be made online on the official Kenyan government website. Here are the steps to follow to submit an application:

  1. Fill in the online application form.
  2. Provide the required information, such as your contact details, nationality, dates of stay and passport details.
  3. Download the required documents (passport photo and copy of passport).
  4. Pay the ETA application fee using an international credit or debit card.
  5. Wait for the system's response, which will be sent by e-mail within 72 hours on average.

Once ETA authorisation has been granted, you must print it out and present it when you arrive in Kenya, as well as to the airline when you board.

Validity and duration of stay authorised by ETA Kenya

The ETA Kenya is valid for a period of 90 days from the date of issue. Once on Kenyan territory, an ETA holder can stay for up to 90 days with the possibility of requesting an extension from the immigration services in Kenya.
