Is it possible to obtain a Kenya ETA as a matter of urgency?

light beacon on table

When it comes to travelling to Kenya, one of the most important things you need to consider is applying for and obtaining an electronic document, also known as an ETA Kenya. For some people, this may be a routine process, but in some cases, you may find yourself facing an emergency situation for which you need a quick response. In this article, we'll look at the different options you have for applying for a Kenya ETA urgently and the steps you need to take to maximise your chances of receiving it on time.

How can I obtain a Kenya ETA in an emergency?

If you need to obtain an ETA Kenya quickly due to an unforeseen situation, the Kenyan government has set up a "premium" procedure, enabling you to obtain the document in a few hours, be able to change the information included and have priority access to an immigration officer in Kenya.

Unfortunately, this procedure has still not been active since the launch of ETA on 1 January 2024.

Check whether you are eligible for this procedure

The Kenyan government has introduced an electronic travel authorisation system to facilitate the visa-free entry process into Kenya. However, it is always important to check whether you are a national of a country eligible for this procedure (i.e. all countries except border countries).

Evaluate the time needed to obtain your ETA Kenya

Generally, processing an ETA Kenya application takes between 1 and 5 working days. However, if you need a quick response in an emergency, the procedure can be processed in a few hours or even less. Bear in mind that this may incur additional costs and that obtaining an ETA Kenya urgently is not guaranteed at 100 %: USD 53 instead of USD 34 consular fee.

Prepare the necessary documents

To maximise your chances of obtaining an ETA Kenya as quickly as possible, you should prepare all the required documents in advance. Here is the list of documents you will need to submit your application:

  • Valid passport - You must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the planned date of entry into Kenya.
  • Recent digital ID photo - It is essential to provide a recent, good-quality colour photo that meets the criteria required by the Kenyan government.
  • Travel documents - For some requests, it may also be necessary to provide a copy of your travel itinerary or hotel reservation.
  • Valid e-mail - An e-mail will be used to receive information about your application, including notification that your ETA has been approved.

Keep an eye on your e-mail inbox

After submitting your application online, keep an eye on your e-mail inbox. You should receive updates on the status of your application, as well as the final decision (approval or refusal) from your ETA. If additional information is required, be sure to reply promptly to avoid any delay in processing your application.

Price of an emergency ETA Kenya

As a general rule, you should be aware that applying for an ETA Kenya as a matter of urgency may involve a higher cost. Document application fees are the same regardless of the reason for travel, but agencies that offer escorting often have additional fees to ensure priority and expedited processing. If you are faced with an emergency situation, this may be an option to consider to maximise your chances of obtaining your Kenya ETA quickly.
