In this globalised world, international travel has become commonplace. One popular destination in Africa is Kenya, a country offering unforgettable experiences and a rich culture. Whether you're a tourist or a business traveller, you may need to transit through Kenya on your journey. If so, you may be wondering whether it's necessary to apply for an ETA.
What is an ETA?
The acronym ETA stands for "Electronic Travel Authorization" and is an electronic travel authorisation allowing foreign nationals to enter certain countries without having to obtain a traditional visa. Kenya abolished visas on 1 January 2024.
This form of authorisation greatly simplifies the administrative formalities involved in travelling, as well as document requirements for those visiting the country concerned for a short period. Each country has its own rules concerning the ETA.
Do I need to apply for an ETA to transit through Kenya?
In order to answer this question, it should be noted that in 2024 the Kenyan government introduced an ETA for nationals of most countries, except border residents. This electronic authorisation is required for all travellers wishing to stay in Kenya as part of a tourist, business or medical trip. However, if you are only transiting through Kenya on your way to another destination, the requirement to obtain an ETA will depend on whether or not you wish to continue your stay in Kenya.
For travellers who are simply in transit and do not need to leave Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, it is generally not necessary to apply for an ETA. If you stay in the international area of the airport, no additional formalities are required.
However, if you need to leave the airport to spend the night in a hotel or for a quick visit to the city of Nairobi, an application for ETA may be necessary.
The same applies to boats (including cruise ships), which do not need to apply for an ETA to transit on the same boat, let alone stay on the boat without disembarking.
How do I apply for an ETA for Kenya?
If you have decided that you do need to apply for an ETA to transit through Kenya, here are a few tips to make the process easier:
- Make the application online: The official site for electronic travel authorisation applications for Kenya is accessible via the Kenyan government portal (.etakenya.go.ke). You can go through a private intermediary, which is inevitably more expensive.
- Prepare the necessary documents: Before submitting your online application, make sure you have all the required documents, such as your valid passport, a recent passport photo and proof of transit (plane ticket, etc).
- Paying expenses : The cost of the ETA is USD 34.09, excluding private processing fees. You will need to pay this fee by credit card when you submit your application online.
- Wait for approval : Once your application has been submitted and paid for, you will have to wait for the Kenyan authorities to examine your file. This process can take several days, so it is advisable to plan ahead to avoid any delays to your travel plans.
