Le Kenya has recently made a significant change to its travel policy by removing the requirement for theelectronic travel authorisation (eTA) for most African countries. This new measure, which affects many of the continent's citizens, is designed to facilitate access to the country and promote regional trade. However, exceptions have been made for the Somalia and the LibyaThe move marks an important step in Kenya's openness to African nations and could strengthen economic and cultural ties in the region. This marks an important step in Kenya's openness towards African nations, and could strengthen economic and cultural ties in the region.

Recently, Kenya announced a significant revision of its travel policyin abolishing the requirement for an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) for the majority of African citizens. This measure aims to facilitate travel between Kenya and other countries on the continent, while reserving certain restrictions for security reasons.

Nationals of many African countries can now travel to Kenya without the need for a prior eTA. The exemption applies to almost all countries, with the exception of Somalia and Libya, where security concerns remain. Citizens of eligible countries will be able to stay in Kenya for up to two monthswithout having to present an electronic travel authorisation.

Advantageous conditions for the countries of the East African Community (EAC)

For members of the East African Community (EAC)which includes Burundi, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan and Tanzania, the situation is even more favourable. These countries were already exempt from the eTA and will continue to benefit from preferential residence conditions. Under the free movement agreements, these citizens will be able to stay in Kenya up to six months without eTAreinforcing regional integration.

Improvements for non-African travellers

The Kenyan government has also taken steps to simplify the eTA process for travellers from other regions. A accelerated treatment system will be implemented, enabling applications approved within a maximum of 72 hours. In some cases, this approval could even be instantaneous, depending on the resources available.

Kenya will also introduce the API/PNR (Advanced Passenger Information/Passenger Name Record)which collects and analyses passenger data. This initiative aims to enhance security while improving the passenger experience at airports. The ministries concerned have been instructed to finalise the specific directives within a week, although no precise date for the implementation of these changes has been announced.

Reminder of the Kenyan eTA

To understand the significance of this change, it is worth remembering that the eTA was introduced in January 2024, replacing the traditional visa. The system was designed to simplify entry procedures while making it easier to track travellers. The eTA is easily accessible online via the website www.etakenya.com or the mobile application Kenya ETA. Valid for three months After approval, it allows a maximum stay of 90 days (single entry).

An overview of the current situation
