Kenya is firmly committed to the development of its tourism sector by introducing a multiple-entry electronic travel authorisation (eTA). This initiative aims to attract cruise passengers and to simplify access to its territory, particularly to the strategic port of Mombasa. By changing entry requirements, the Kenyan government hopes to attract an increasing number of visitors, while stimulating the growth of cruise tourism in the region.

Kenya, a destination of choice for lovers of exotic landscapes and adventure, is strengthening its appeal by introducing a multiple-entry electronic travel authorisation (ETA). This reform aims to attract cruise passengers in particular by simplifying their access to the country, and promoting the development of the cruise tourism sector at the port of Mombasa. The introduction of this new initiative offers a real opportunity to strengthen Kenya's tourism industry while supporting the local economy.

The Kenyan President, William Rutorecently announced that the government is committed to reviewing visa and eTA requirements in order to stimulate growth in the cruise tourism sector. With the introduction of the multi-entry eTA, cruise tourists will have the freedom to move freely between their ships and the city from Mombasa, without having to request authorisation each time they disembark. This initiative aims to attract more visitors and consolidate Kenya as a preferred stopover for cruise passengers.

The growth of the cruise tourism sector in Kenya is already visible, as demonstrated by an increase of 163.5 % in the number of cruise tourists welcomed last year. In figures, this represents 6,561 visitors, an encouraging result that reinforces the idea that new measures need to be put in place to make it easier and more fluid to welcome these tourists. The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife is actively working to maximise this growth, and with the multi-entry eTA, the government hopes to encourage this positive trend.

The Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Mianounderlined that the introduction of multi-entry eTA, coupled with new investment in port infrastructureThe project is expected to greatly improve access to the port of Mombasa and attract more cruise ships. By improving port services and facilities, Kenya aims to strengthen its tourism offering and make the port of Mombasa a real gateway for cruise passengers.

The Ministry of Tourism also reported a 15 % increase in international tourist arrivalsWith a total of 2.4 million visitors in 2024. This growth is also reflected in the revenue generated by the tourism sector, which rose by 19.8 1QTP9 to Sh452.20 billion (approximately $3.49 billion). President Ruto stressed the importance of adapting hospitality infrastructure to meet demand and improve the overall tourism experience, particularly for those travelling by sea.

Kenya is ambitious in its objectives, aiming to welcome 5 million tourists a year by 2027. This figure represents a significant increase on the 2.4 million recorded in 2024. The recent announcement of the arrival of a luxury cruise ship, the Norwegian Dawnwith 2,200 passengers and over 1,000 crew, is a good example of this dynamic. A further eight cruise ships are expected to dock at the Mombasa cruise terminal before the end of the season, consolidating Kenya's position on the world cruise tourism scene.

The introduction of the multi-entry eTA meets a growing need and demonstrates the Kenyan authorities' desire to make travel more accessible to cruise tourists. By facilitating entry and streamlining administrative procedures, the Kenyan government is underlining its commitment to enhancing the country's image as a dream stopover for cruise passengers. The efforts made should also inspire confidence among investors and cruise operators, with the hope of a positive impact on the tourism sector as a whole.

A new measure to boost cruise tourism
